ZF's GS82-AA02 Sensor Increases E-Bike Speed Sensor Portfolio

October 19, 2020

GS82-AA02 E-Bike Sensor

With the increasing popularity and growing trend of e-bikes, bicycle system suppliers have set goals to optimize power and performance of their drive systems. In order to support the driver in the best possible way, sensors are needed to deliver the required data and therefore adapt the engine's power support. An essential component is the ZF e-bike sensor for measuring the current speed. The ZF e-bike sensor is based on Hall technology with significant advantages over conventional reed switches.

Especially for high-quality e-bikes, all components need to be functional, from the drive to the battery and cabling. This is also the case with the ZF e-bike sensor. Speed sensors of the GS series have been specially developed for use in Pedelecs and S-Pedelecs. The extremely compact design meets the necessary requirements for the use in e-bikes. The sensors are based on the principle of Hall-effect and therefore they are non-contact and durable. In combination with ferromagnetic target wheels, a high-resolution speed measurement with over 50 pulses per revolution can be implemented without any problems. In practice, this leads to a finer and quicker response from the e-bike drive - especially at lower speeds (e.g. when starting up a hill). The differential measurement of the magnetic flux also increases the robustness of the sensor against vibrations. In addition, there is no need for an external magnet, which is used with conventional reed switches. These are frail against even slight shifts on the spoke, which leads to functional failures and shut down of the drive unit.

The GS82-AA02 is the latest addition to the ZF e-bike sensor portfolio. This sensor is significantly more compact than its’ predecessor (21.75mm length, 9.35mm diameter) and optimized for use in e-bikes. As an interface to the drive system, the Higo connector has a cross-section of only 0.14mm² and due to its small size is prevalent in the e-bike industry. Depending on the customer's requirements the contact via connector, as well as the cable length, can be preselected individually. The sensor requires a constant voltage supply of 6.5 - 20 VDC and measures frequencies between 1 and 2,500 Hz. They are designed for a temperature range from -25 ° C to + 85°C to fulfill the declaration of conformity in the e-bike industry.

The ZF sensor was originally developed for ABS applications. In addition to e-bikes, other target markets include e-scooters and various sports equipment for this small and efficient sensor.

Sensata ACW4 / TCW4 Hall Effect Sensors

January 27, 2020

Sensata Technologies, an industrial technology company and a leading provider of sensors, today announced the availability of the new ACW4 Single Turn and TCW4 Multi Turn Absolute Hall Effect Sensors, which feature an over-molded, two-part modular construction that provides engineers with exceptional design flexibility.

The sensing electronics are encased in a thermoplastic polyamide shell while the separate activating magnet is external to the sensor assembly. This modular architecture results in a compact package of only 50mm in diameter by a maximum 24mm thick that allows designers to easily incorporate the ACW4 and TCW4 sensors into both new and existing systems. An over-molded housing completely encapsulates the electronics and seals the cable entry from exposure to the elements, making this IP67-rated sensor an ideal solution for robotic, industrial, manufacturing and material handling applications where dusty or wet conditions are common.

To help save time and cost, Sensata offers a variety of engineered magnet holder accessories that developers can use instead of designing and testing their own. A variety of output types are available to ensure that the ACW4 or TWC4 sensors can interface with the most common controllers. Unlike typical Hall effect sensors, which rely on a shaft to operate, there are no moving parts in contact with each other; eliminating any potential wear or misalignment.

Schurter Thermal Fuse RTS Now Also Available With Shunt

April 8, 2019

Schurter Logo1.jpg

• Protects power semiconductors from thermal runaway
• Integrated current measuring sensor (shunt)
• SMD reflow solderable up to 260 °C
• Meets requirements according to AECQ

Schurter's RTS thermal fuse, successfully launched in 2018, gets a new variant with an integrated shunt. The RTS is a particularly compact overtemperature protection device for power semiconductors in SMD technology for highest demands.

RTS stands for Reflowable Thermal Switch. It was developed to protect highly integrated power semiconductors from overheating. Prior to mechanical activation, the new thermal fuse can be soldered on conventional reflow soldering machines with profiles up to 260 °C.

Minimal Footprint
The new overtemperature protection device comes in the same minimal dimensions and maximum breaking capacity despite its additional shunt functionality. On its small 6.6 x 8.8 mm footprint the RTS can handle operating currents of up to 130 A and rated voltages of up to 60 VDC.

Integrated Current Measuring Sensor (Shunt)
The shunt version has an integrated resistance with particularly low temperature dependence. This resistance, known as a shunt, enables precise current measurement and enables an additional – non-thermal – circuit protection, e.g. via a controller.

Protection Against Thermal Runaway
Thermal runaway refers to the overheating of a power semiconductor due to a self-reinforcing, heat-producing process. One of the reason is the trend towards increasing power density and miniaturization of electronic circuits. The RTS protects these power semiconductors against thermal runaway. In such an event, the thermal fuse reliably interrupts the circuit at a precisely defined temperature as a fail-safe device.

Finder Type 18.5K - KNX Presence and Movement Detector

May 19, 2017
Finder.jpg

A new technological product has been added to the range of presence and movement detectors of Series 18: this is the type 18.5K detector with KNX technology.

Type 18.5D

The new movement sensor uses the reliable and tested detection technology that already characterizes the previous Series 18 detector models and is suitable for applications in building automation systems featuring the KNX standard.

Technical features:
Specifically designed to sense micro movements, this sensor is the ideal solution for the management of lighting systems in offices and work environments in general and schools.

The sensor lens has been developed to obtain higher sensitivity in the detection of micro movements and guarantees two reading and sensitivity areas, identified as
•a movement area, which is larger and covers an area of 8x8 m;
•a presence area, which is more important for detecting small movements, and covers an area of 4x4 m.

The type 18.5K movement and presence sensor is provided with 2 software outputs, one of which is controlled according to the light measured by the internal sensor (this function can be disconnected), and is also appropriate for particular types of systems where it is necessary to control both the lighting and the heating/air conditioning.

There is also a third software output that sends only movement information to the KNX Bus: thanks to specific software inputs, sensors can be networked in Master/Slave configuration. This functionality is particularly suitable for controlling large rooms.

Accessories included in the package:
The detector is supplied complete with supports that can be used for ceiling or suspended ceiling mounting and is powered directly by the KNX Bus.

Finder Introduces Type 18.5D Movement and Presence Detector

January 19, 2017

Finder.jpg

Type 18.5D

Finder presents its new movement and presence detector Type 18.5D with Bluetooth programming technology, and DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface), making programming through a smart phone easier than ever.

The detection of small movements make this detector particularly well suited for applications in schools, offices and other environments where there is not necessarily high levels of movement.

A special lens has been developed to sense both normal movements and micro movements. Normal ‘movement’ is detected over the wider area of 8 x 8 meters, while the ‘presence zone’ has increased sensitivity for the detection of small movements within a central area of 4 x 4 meters.

Through the use of Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) technology programming the detector’s operating characteristics can be easily and conveniently done using an Android or iOS smartphone.

After installing the 18.5D, simply download the Free App Finder Toolbox from Google and Apple’s official stores and set all the required parameters.
