Supercaps, also known as supercapacitors, are a special type of energy storage device that combine certain properties of rechargeable batteries with those of capacitors. They can store enormous amounts of energy this way and release it again very quickly, which makes them particularly valuable for many applications.
Compared to rechargeable batteries of the same weight, supercapacitors only have around 10 % of the energy density. However, their power density is around ten to a hundred times greater. Supercapacitors can therefore be charged and discharged much faster. They also withstand many more charging cycles than rechargeable batteries and are therefore suitable as a replacement or supplement wherever high switching loads are required.

The energy density indicates how much energy a storage device can hold over a longer period of time. A high energy density is essential for applications that require a continuous energy supply.
