Save Time and Costs with Eaton DC-Contactors
Clever Use of a Proven Technology
Thanks to the use of proven hybrid technology, the contacts in Eaton DC contactors have a long lifespan and low contact wear. Hybrid contactors feature two mechanical contacts – a extinguishing contact and a break contact – that are connected in series.
Moreover, they have an IGBT power semiconductor switch connected in parallel with the extinguishing contact. When one of these contactors is switched off, the first thing that happens is that the IGBT is switched on. After this, the extinguishing contact opens mechanically, commutating the current to the IGBT so that it can be interrupted by the power electronics. Finally, the break contact is opened in a de-energized state, achieving the required potential isolation.
Together with this configuration, a wide-range coil for DC and AC voltages makes our DC contactors a maintenance-free and reliable part of any machine or system.

Eaton Corporation is offering a new plug-in unit for the NZM3 circuit-breaker. The NZM3 plug-in unit allows customers to exchange the circuit-breaker in a panel simply and quickly, and it also offers benefits during service work because the system section concerned can be disconnected simply and safely.
The housing design of the base has been adapted to that of the NZM3, so that all connection options provided by the main device can also be implemented in the base. For Eaton, safety has the highest priority, and the live parts in the base are therefore automatically protected from direct contact when the circuit-breaker compartment is pulled out. The circuit-breaker also disconnects automatically as soon as the mounting screws are loosened when the circuit-breaker is in the On position or when the circuit-breaker is pushed in. In the latter case, the circuit-breaker can then only be switched on if the mounting screws between the circuit-breaker and the plug-in unit base have been tightened.
Even with the wide range of features and capabilities provided by its products, simple operation and flexibility are top priorities for Eaton: Just fit the modified NZM3 with its rear terminal bolts into the guide, tighten the bolts, and the system is already operational. An auxiliary conductor plug-in device is also available as an option. This enables the connected shunt or undervoltage releases, auxiliary contactors and also the remote operator to be tested without having to fit the circuit-breaker into the panel. In this way, correct operation can be tested prior to commissioning. Users also do not have to change the wiring when exchanging a circuit-breaker: The auxiliary conductor plug can simply be removed from its base, fitted onto the new terminal cables and operation is restored.
Technical specifications have been set to meet the wide range of requirements in the industrial sector and are impressive in every respect: The new plug-in unit on the NZM3 from 250 - 500A can be used without any derating up to an ambient temperature of 40°C, and this includes the extensive range of accessories. For more demanding applications, the full switching capacity of the NZM3 - up to 150kA at 415VAC - can be used. The circuit-breaker can also be fitted in many positions, either vertically or turned anticlockwise/clockwise by 90°.

Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation will be presenting the new PowerXL variable frequency drives for a rating range of up to 250 kW at this year's SPS/IPC/Drives fair in Nuremberg. The company is thus logically expanding its strategy of applying the Lean methodology to the engineering in machine and panel building. Pluggable modules enable the PowerXL variable frequency drives to be incorporated quickly and simply into Eaton's SmartWire-DT connection and communication technology which completely eliminates the need for conventional control circuit wiring. The new PowerXL variable frequency drives thus give users from the machine building sector as well as from the materials handling and building services sectors an easy-to-install, operator-friendly and energy efficient solution for driving devices such as pumps, fans, conveyor belts, cranes, winding machines, compressors or lifts.
The new PowerXL variable frequency drive series currently consists of two models: The DC1 Compact and the DA1 Advanced Machinery Drive. The DC1 is the basic model covering ratings from 0.37 to 11 kW, and was developed for applications where robust design, availability and universal functionality are the main requirements. The DA1 series is designed for ratings from 0.75 kW to 250 kW, and is suitable for the most demanding solutions requiring high performance. The PowerXL variable frequency drives also offer different open and closed-loop control methods. The DC1 controls the motor with U/f characteristics and also enables an increased torque. The PowerXL frequency inverters are thus able to operate the motors at 150% of the rated power for 60 s and at 175% for 2 s. The DA1 models also offer the user the possibility of sensorless vector control (SLV) as well closed-loop control with a rotary encoder (CLV). In sensorless vector mode the DA1 can even move from rest with a 200% torque and without the use of an encoder. The DA1 series is provided with PLC functionality and offers, in addition to a standard integrated PID controller, the possibility of powerful solutions for different applications such as cranes, lifts, winding machines and compressors.
User-friendliness was a prime objective in the development. Self-explanatory type codes, autotune functionality and convenient parameterization (with only 14 standard parameters) simplify configuration and commissioning. As well as programming via the keys on the device or alternatively via a PC, the user can copy the parameter settings from one device to another quickly and simply using a Bluetooth PC stick with an RJ45 interface.
The PowerXL variable frequency drives come as standard with the Modbus RTU and CANopen fieldbus system. The user can connect other fieldbus systems such as Profibus, Profinet, DeviceNet, EthernetIP, EtherCat, Modbus TCP and BACnet easily via fieldbus modules. As an alternative to the fieldbus connection, the PowerXL variable frequency drives can also be incorporated in the SmartWire-DT communication system. This makes it possible to not only parameterize the PowerXL frequency inverters centrally via the SmartWire-DT interface, but also to send them control commands and read diagnostic data from them. The device can also be controlled via a PROFIdrive profile which makes the full function spectrum of the PowerXL frequency inverters available.
With the focus on energy efficiency, the DA1 series supports both the standard three-phase motors that normally comply with the current IE2 and IE3 standard, as well as the highly efficient permanent magnet motors that are designed for the future IE4 standard. The devices also feature an energy optimizer that can automatically reduce the motor voltage with light loads.
The PowerXL frequency inverters supply full power up to ambient temperatures of 50°C (IP20). Eaton also offers the DA1 models up to 160 kW with protection to IP55. All devices come with international approvals (CE, cUL, UL, C-Tick, Gost-R, RoHS, DNV) and with single-phase and three-phase voltage inputs of 115 V, 230 V and 400/480 V are ideally suited for global use.

The revolutionary SmartWire-DT system from Eaton’s Electrical Sector, which virtually eliminates the need for conventional control wiring in panels and on machines, is now even more versatile and convenient. This follows the addition of devices with integral SmartWire-DT connectivity to two key product ranges – easy800 control relays and PKE motor-protection circuit breakers.
In many applications, easy800 programmable control relays with SmartWire-DT make it possible to implement sophisticated control systems without the need to use programmable controllers (PLCs), which means big savings in costs and complexity. In addition, Eaton’s easySoft-Pro software makes easy800 relays simple to program, even for users who have no specialist programming knowledge or experience.
The new easy800 relays are suitable for applications with up to 320 I/O and are programmed using straightforward and well-known ladder diagram techniques. The easySoft-Pro programming software now includes SmartWire Assist to configure external devices, allowing control systems that incorporate the new relays to be drawn, configured, programmed and tested using just this one intuitive software package.
Equally well suited for use in control systems based on easy800 relays, and those based on conventional PLCs, PKE motor-protection circuit breakers with SmartWire-DT allow users to monitor the operation of their motors in detail and in real time. The PKE units can report via the SmartWire-DT connection a wide range of operating parameters that include motor current, motor fault conditions and overload status. This is achieved without the need for additional hardware like current transformers and specialist relays, which are not only costly to buy, but are also inconvenient to fit and wire.
A key benefit of the information supplied by PKE units with SmartWire-DT connectivity is that, in many cases, it allows developing problems to be identified and addressed before a motor trip occurs, thereby greatly reducing downtime and costly production losses.
SmartWire-DT from Eaton is a powerful and versatile communications system that enables switching and control devices, such as contactors, circuit breakers and pushbuttons, as well as analogue I/O devices, to be connected quickly and simply using pre-fabricated plug-in cables. This saves time in building and testing control systems, as well as virtually eliminating the risk of wiring errors while greatly increasing the ease with which future modifications can be made.
