Economical, Reliable FSS-SMT Series Sensor Takes Up Less Space on the Printed Circuit Board;
SMT Packaging Often Eliminates Hand Soldering
Honeywell today introduced its smallest force sensor, the FSS-SMT Series, a low profile surface mount device that allows for automated assembly on a printed circuit board (PCB), often eliminating hand soldering and helping to reduce assembly costs. Cost-conscious customers will be attracted to the FSSSMT Series because it provides all four points of the Wheatstone bridg sensing element that gives them the flexibility to customize and integrate the sensor into other system electronics.
The FSS-SMT Series is designed to provide excellent reliability with a 20 million Mean Cycle To Failure (MCTF) at 25 °C [77 °F] rating that allows for consistent output over time, helping to reduce repairs or replacements. Low deflection (30 microns typical at full scale) and fast response help reduce measurement errors. Its stainless steel ball provides excellent mechanical stability, while the use of innovative elastomeric technology and engineered molded plastics results in load excitation capacities of 44 N over-force, making the sensor better able to handle unexpected increases in load.
Potential applications include occlusion detection, load and compression sensing, and variable tension control in ambulatory pumps, clinical diagnostic equipment, enteral pumps, infusion pumps, kidney dialysis machines, and wire bonding equipment.
The FSS-SMT Series is designed to provide precise and reliable force sensing performance in a compact commercial-grade package. The sensor incorporates Honeywell sensing technology that uses a specialized piezoresistive micromachined silicon sensing element. The low power consuming, unamplified, uncompensated Wheatstone bridge circuit design provides inherently stable millivolt output over the force range.
The FSS-SMT Series is an extension to Honeywell’s force sensor portfolio that includes the FSG Series, FSS Series, 1865 Series, and FS01/FS03 Series.

Bulgin Components is pleased to announce a new range of connectors designed for use in hazardous environments - the EXPlora series.
Independently tested for compliance to ATEX standards for use in Zone 2 and Zone 22 environments, the new EXP series is manufactured from a tough high grade UL94V-0 rated Polycarbonate material. Similar in construction to Bulgin’s popular 900 Series Buccaneer, the connectors are environmentally sealed to IP68 to provide protection for the most severe of dust and water borne environments. Ambient temperature range is from –20°C to +55°C.
The ATEX coding is: Ex II 3 GD and the certificated no: Baseefa 09ATEX0232X.
Compact in design, the connectors are available in 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 10 pole variants and in four body styles - cable, in-line cable, panel and flange fixing. Each contact insert is available with either pin or socket contacts and either can be used with any of the body styles to give the maximum choice of combinations. They are rated up to 18A, 600Vac/dc for 2, 3, 4 and 5 poles, 16A, 430Vac/dc for 7 pole and 10A, 250Vac/dc for 10 poles. The 3, 4, 5 and 7 pole versions have leading earth contacts making them suitable for single or three phase applications.
The EXPlora series connector achieves an environmental seal to IP68 as soon as the locking ring is tightened, without any supplementary sealing. Sealing caps, with strong steel retaining cords, maintain the sealing integrity when connectors are not mated. The IP68 rating is tested submerged at 10m for two weeks.
Screw fixing terminal contacts, designed to accommodate conductors up to 4mm2, require no special tooling and allow the connector to be easily terminated and maintained ‘in the field’, while positive location keyways prohibit the possibility of mis-connection. Two designs of cable retention and alternative sealing glands allow for cable acceptance from 7mm through to 22mm diameter.
The connectors are designed for a wide variety of applications in mind, where a secure, reliable and easy to terminate interface is required, particularly for manufacturers supplying machines, equipment and systems where these explosive atmospheres might exist. As well the petrochemical industries, this could include; mills and grain stores, paint and ink manufacturers, timber mills and processors, cement works, shipyards and sewage treatment.
The EXPlora range is most suited to manufacturers of ancillary electrical equipment such as motors, pumps, lighting equipment, process and control gear for use in factories and plant where hazardous, or explosive atmospheres can be caused by flammable gases, mists or vapours or by combustible dusts.

Blade-type fuse replacements distinguish genuine overloads
E-T-A Circuit Breakers, quality designer and manufacturer of a broad range of electro-mechanical and electronic products for circuit protection, has introduced a new low cost E-T-A 1626 miniaturised circuit breaker designed as a direct replacement for blade-type fuses. It provides superior protection to fuses through its ability to distinguish between temporary surges and genuine overloads. As well as protecting electrical circuits in cars, trucks and buses, it can also be used in watercraft and other 12/24V DC wiring applications, such as heavy-duty and off-road vehicles.
The new blade-type E-T-A 1626 Mini-CBE is available in three versions – with automatic reset, with a reset button, or with both a manual release and a reset button. The colour coded E-T-A 1626s are available in all the standard current ratings offered by blade fuses from 5A up to 30A. Depending on the version, when the 1626 has tripped it resets automatically when the load is removed or the re-set button pops up showing clearly which circuit has a fault.
The colour coding provides quick and easy identification to ensure correct plug-in placement in standard ISO 8820-3 Type F automotive blade-type fuse blocks, or the E-T-A 1626 can be fitted to purpose-designed E-T-A modular mounting bases. At the same time, the electrical performance characteristics of the E-T-A 1626 enable it to distinguish between temporary surges and genuine overloads, providing superior protection to fuses. This is especially important for motors, lamp loads and other circuits where discrimination is necessary between in-rush currents and normal operating conditions. Also, E-T-A circuit breaker performance is stable over time: fuses can age, causing their blow characteristics to change, which may lead to nuisance blowing of fuses with consequent problems while the vehicle is in use.
Overall dimensions of the body of the overcurrent circuit breaker are just 25mm in height above the blade x 13.3mm wide x 7mm thick. The operating temperature range is -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C.
