Schurter TTS RGB Contactless Switch

March 11, 2022

Schurter Logo1.jpg

Switch For Contactless, Hygienic Switching with Customized Color Settings:
• Contactless switch with optical feedback
• Individual, customized color settings
• For applications in public areas (no smear infections)
• High precision detection

Contactless, highly precise and now also individually color-customizable: The new Schurter TTS RGB extends the technical finesse of the TTS switch introduced last year with the popular RGB functionality.

The TTS family is getting a new member in the form of a color-customizable variant, called: TTS RGB. All TTS switches use the highly precise Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology. Light is emitted by a transmitter and reflected by one or more objects. The reflected light beams are then detected and the distance is determined from the time of flight.

Colorful Ring Illumination:
In addition to the pre-programmed bicolor switches, which are available in "Momentary" and "Latching" versions, the new RGB variant makes things much more colorful. Depending on the wiring, the customer can easily set the ring illumination color as desired.

High Reliability:
By default, the detection distance is programmed for 20 to 60 mm. This ensures that wiping/cleaning the switch surface will not trigger a signal. An advantage of ToF technology is that this sensor technology has no problems in differentiating dark from light surfaces. White or black objects: this has no effect on detection quality or speed.

Since the TTS has no moving parts, its service life is more than 20 million switching cycles. Thanks to its high IP protection class and the ability to "detect" rain, this switch is also ideally suited for outdoor use.

Application Areas:
The contactless switches of the TTS RGB family are extremely multifunctional. They can be used wherever contact should be avoided to the greatest possible extent. Examples would be doors, garbage cans, parking systems and sanitary areas.

Schurter NEMA Receptacles 5-15R Portfolio Expanded

February 17, 2022

Schurter Logo1.jpg

Convenience Outlets Redesigned
• NR010 – IDC Along orientation for efficient wiring
NEW: IDC Cross Orientation to the Pin-Axis
• NR020 – The classic with improved temperature rating
• NR021 – Tamper Resistant

Schurter's latest series of appliance outlets NR020 and NR021 combine classic features with new ones to meet increased fire protection and safety standards according to UL 498 Tamper Resistant, as well as facilitating compliance of receptacles used in Household and Commercial Furniture and Furniture Power Distribution Units (FPDUs), according to UL 962 and UL 962A. Higher temperature ratings and added configurations for series NR010 and NR020 respond to power demands facing Datacom infrastructures today.

Higher Temperature Rated Receptacles:
Packing density of equipment for data communication and storage continues to be regularly revolutionized with the surge of usage and functionality. Increasing ambient temperatures go hand in hand with these advancements, as demand trickles down to the smallest components to keep pace with emerging needs of the appliance manufacturers. The NR010 and NR020 series have an operating temperature range of -25 ˚C to 150 ˚C in response to the power needs of the Datacom industry. In addition, the NR010 with IDC terminals in Along- and Cross orientation to the Pin-Axis provides a version with an independent L terminal for the IDC-Along version. The neutral and ground terminals can still be bussed, while the line terminal can be used for maximum load according to UL rating 15 A, 125 V. It also extends the capability of adding functionality to each outlet individually.

Tamper Resistant Receptacles – TRR:
The concept of tamper-resistant receptacles is not a recent development; these devices have been a standard product offering of wiring device manufacturers for many years. The devices are designed to protect individuals (primarily children) from accidental shock resulting from the insertion of foreign objects. The US National Electric Code NEC® Article 406.12 states that all 15- and 20-ampere, 125- and 250-Volt nonlocking-type receptacles installed in dwelling units must be Tamper Resistant. In 2017, changes to the Code expanded on these requirements and locations. Previously, tamper-resistant receptacles were required in dwelling units, guest rooms and guest suites of hotels and motels, and in childcare facilities. The expanded code brings these safety devices to preschools and elementary education facilities; business offices, corridors, waiting rooms and the like in clinics, medical and dental offices and outpatient facilities; to assembly occupancies such as places of awaiting transportation, gymnasiums, skating rinks, auditoriums; and to dormitories. These expanded locations are areas that small children frequently occupy.

Tamper resistant receptacles feature a UL recognized safety shutter system that prevents the insertion of foreign objects into a receptacle. The safety shutters will only open upon simultaneous insertion of two plug blades. Additional tests including Probe Test, Impact Test, Mechanical Endurance Test and Dielectric Voltage Withstand Test for Tamper Resistant Receptacles TRR are included in UL 498. After passing all the above performance tests, tamper-resistant receptacles must have either the words “Tamper Resistant" or the letters "TR" (minimum 3/16 inches high) on the device as a clear indication that this is a tamper-resistant receptacle.

Schurters’s NR021 NEMA 5-15R Tamper Resistant series meets the expanded code requirements according to UL 498. Additionally, with the option of an added insulated wall between the L, N terminals, compliance with the Spill Test, outlined in UL 962 Sec. 62, is more cost effective and efficient for manufacturers of Household and Commercial Furniture and Furniture Power Distribution Units (FPDUs).

Schurter MSS Switch

February 2, 2022

Schurter Logo1.jpg

Active, Electronic Switch for the Harshest Conditions
- Minimal installation depth
- Multi color side illumination
- Modern and fresh design

Compact, light and powerful - these are the requirements that are placed on a switch in a variety of applications. The installation depth often interferes with these requirements. This is not the case with the new MSS from Schurter, but it has even more to offer. Its fresh, lively design with multi-color side illumination and the new switch technology make it stand out from the crowd on the market.

The new MSS uses a technology that was previously unknown in the electronic switch world. The MSS is an active electronic switch that reacts to a minimal deformation of the actuating surface. The technology is extremely precise so that only a small amount of pressure is required.

Gentle Pressure Required
Even light pressure on the surface of the button triggers the switching signal. A mere touch - as with a capacitive switch - is not sufficient for this. For many areas of application, this is exactly what is required. This ensures that no switching function takes place in such a case. The design of this technology is particularly compact and thus enables the low installation depth of the MSS.

Tough Performer
The Schurter MSS switches offer the highest reliability. As they have no moving parts, their service life is more than 20 million switching cycles. Thanks to the enclosed design, the MSS achieves protection class IP67 and shock resistance rating IK06. These values predestine it for use in particularly demanding environments.

Modern and Fresh Design
The innovative multi color side illumination not only provides the user with visual feedback, but also makes the unit's user interface "appear in a new light".

But even with the non-illuminated versions, clear function assignments can be made through the various color versions available. Depending on the color choice of the switch, this gives the user interface a fresh, lively appearance.

Application Areas
The MSS switches are extremely versatile. Due to their technical features, they can be used in industrial installations as well as in devices for the consumer market.

Schurter RTS Thermal Fuse - Improved Protection of Power Semiconductors

November 12, 2021

Schurter Logo1.jpg

RTS Tripping Temperature > 175°C

Improved Protection of Power Semiconductors
• Protects power semiconductors from thermal runaway
• SMD reflow solderable up to 260 °C
• Tested for usage up to 60 V
• Integrated current measuring sensor (shunt)

Schurter RTS thermal fuse, successfully launched in 2018, gets a new variant with a tripping temperature of >175°C. The RTS is a particularly compact overtemperature protection device for power semiconductors in SMD technology for highest demands.

RTS stands for Reflowable Thermal Switch. It was developed to protect highly integrated power semiconductors from overheating. Prior to mechanical activation, the new thermal fuse can be soldered on conventional reflow soldering machines with profiles up to 260 °C.

Protection Against Thermal Runaway
Thermal runaway refers to the overheating of a power semiconductor due to a self-reinforcing, heat-producing process. One of the reasons is the trend towards increasing power density and miniaturization of electronic circuits. The RTS protects these power semiconductors against thermal runaway. In such an event, the thermal fuse acts as a fail-safe device and reliably interrupts the circuit from as early as 175 °C and thus addresses the operating temperatures of common power semiconductors even better.

Minimal Footprint
The new overtemperature protection device comes in the same minimal dimensions and maximum breaking capacity despite its additional shunt functionality. On its small 6.6 x 8.8 mm footprint the RTS can handle operating currents of up to 130 A and rated voltages of up to 60 VDC.

Integrated Current Measuring Sensor (Shunt)
The shunt version has an integrated resistance with particularly low temperature dependence. This resistance, known as a shunt, enables precise current measurement and enables an additional – non-thermal – circuit protection, e.g. via a controller.

Schurter CHS Capacitive Switch

October 27, 2021

Schurter Logo1.jpg

CHS Capacitive Switch that can be Installed in a Hidden Way

• Designed for use behind all non-conductive materials where openings in the user interface are not desired
• Provides the designer with a lot of freedom in the design of the user interface
• Highest reliability and service life
• RGB area illumination

Conventional switches inevitably require mounting holes in the user interface. Not so with the new Schurter CHS. CHS stands for "Capacitive Hidden Switch". They can be mounted hidden behind the surface of non-conductive materials and are therefore invisible. This approach allows completely new possibilities for designing user interfaces that ideally meet the requirements of specific applications.

With capacitive switches, an electric field is built up on the user surface of the sensor. This technology is used to design a switch with the Schurter CHS that no longer requires direct sensor contact with the finger to trigger. The electrical field change required to trigger the switching process is still achieved even if a non-conductive material (glass, plastic, wood, or similar) is inserted between the sensor and the finger.

Use in Highly Sensitive Environments:
The new CHS is simply glued behind a wide variety of non-conductive materials and thus enables the construction of control elements for devices (medical technology, food industry) where hygiene plays a major role. Since there are no holes or slots created by the installation and the switch also has no moving parts, potentially harmful microbes have no possibility to "settle" on the user interface. This means that materials can be chosen that are particularly easy to
clean.

Sensitivity Adjustable:
The SCHURTER CHS is programmed as standard so that it does not trip in the event of field changes caused by liquids or minor wiping contact. This is only done by precise touching of the switching surface. However, adjustments can be made here at the customer's request. This applies in particular to the thickness of the material behind which the switch is bonded. As standard, the sensitivity is designed for a glass thickness of up to 2 mm.

Designer’s Dream:
Switches are always a challenge for industrial designers. Their installation in the user interface often "disturbs" the appearance and structure of the same. The desire for an invisible switch is therefore great, because with it one no longer has to make compromises and is to a great extent free in the design.

Available in 3 Variants:
The new SCHURTER CHS is available in three different variants.
• CHS 1 comes without illumination and is with a mounting depth of less than 6 mm the optimal solution for space constrained designs.
• CHS 2 provides optical feedback. The RGB lighting can be used as a design element.
• CHS 3 is the potted version with lighting for demanding use in harsh environments.

Schurter FMBD EP 3-Phase Mains Filter

August 3, 2021

Schurter Logo1.jpg

FMBD EP 3-Phase Mains Filter
• Compact design with minimal footprint
• Double-stage filter with high attenuation
• Variants for high voltage applications
• Wide temperature range

Schurter introduces the FMBD EP double-stage flagship filter family for 3 phases with neutral line systems. Thanks to its particularly compact dimensions and high performance, the new filter series is ideally suited for the tight space conditions in today's machine and industrial plant construction. Versions with high nominal voltages make a wide field of applications possible.

Space is a scarce commodity in control cabinets for industrial applications in the 3-phase range. Schurter has addressed this problem with another completely new filter design, which is much more compact than previous generations. The new, almost cuboidal design makes optimum use of the space in the housing. Thanks to a double-stage filter and the use of the highest quality components (generously dimensioned film capacitors, chokes with highly permeable cores), the new development shines with exceptional broadband filter attenuation.

Suitable for High EMC Emissions
The double-stage filter family is therefore also appropriate for applications with particularly high EMC emissions, as is frequently encountered in industry. Typical applications include machines and systems for automatic production, motor drives and industrial plant machinery. These powerful filters are also the first choice for modern frequency inverters for motor control.

Mounting
The FMBD EP series features screw terminals for absolutely safe wiring. Thanks to the metal flange, an excellent earth connection is ensured when screwed to the chassis.

Wide Temperature and Voltage Range
The standard types can be used over a wide temperature range from -40 °C to 100 °C. The filters are designed for currents from 16 A to 230 A at an ambient temperature of 50 °C. They have both ENEC and cURus approval for applications up to 520 VAC and ENEC and UR approval for applications up to 760 VAC.

Leakage Current
The standard versions are designed for industrial applications with leakage currents of <9.4 mA. Special variants with leakage currents of <2.5 mA are available for critical applications.

The completely redesigned FMBD EP models are the ideal replacement for all types of SCHURTER FMBD and FMBD NEO filters. They offer at least identical performance with significantly reduced dimensions and weight.

Schurter TTS Contactless Switch

July 2, 2021

Schurter Logo1.jpg

Contactless Switch for Hygienic Switching
• Designed for applications in public areas where non-contact switching prevents the transmission of pathogens
• Optical technology precisely adjustable

The Covid 19 pandemic has greatly increased the demand for non-contact push buttons and switches. Various studies show that the transmission of viruses and bacteria via surfaces exposed to constant contact with hands is high.

A wide variety of technologies for contactless switching are vying for the favor of developers and buyers. But not everyone is suitable to the same extent. Often, they also send out false signals under certain
conditions (e.g., splash water, rain) and this trigger unintentional switching. The optical technology TOF (Time of Flight) used in the Schurter TTS can be programmed individually, with high precision, so that malfunctions are prevented.

Highest Reliability
The switch is programmed so that the standard detection distance is 60 to 0.02 mm. This ensures that wiping over or cleaning the switch surface will not trigger a switching signal. Schurter TTS switches offer the highest reliability. Since they have no moving parts, their lifetime is more than 20 million switching cycles.

Ring Illumination and Installation
The visual feedback is ensured by a two-color ring illumination (red/green) in the actuator, whose supply voltage is between 5 and 28 VDC. The simple installation of the TTS, which is fixed by means of a nut, and an anti-twist protection allow a maximum easy replacement.

Areas of Application
The new TTS non-contact switch can be used for a wide range of applications. It is suitable in public areas, for example for vending machines, parking systems or in sanitary areas to avoid any contact by hand. However, the detection distance can also be set so that the switch can be used as a photoelectric barrier for certain applications, this opening up a new field of application.

Schurter DKIV-1 Choke For Printed Circuit Board Mounting

May 10, 2021

Schurter Logo1.jpg

1-Phase High Current Choke in Vertical Design
• Small footprint on the printed circuit board
• Open design optimizes heat dissipation
• Compact and lightweight
• Nanocrystalline or ferrite ring cores

Schurter expands its range of current-compensated chokes for printed circuit board mounting, to include a series for 1-phase high-current applications. Due to the vertical design, the new DKIV-1 series sports a significantly smaller footprint. The chokes are available with a ferrite or nanocrystalline core for rated currents from 10 A to 50 A. The open design makes the chokes particularly compact and lightweight.

Like all other aspects of electronic design, the power circuit is oftentimes built today using discrete components on printed circuit boards. With the trend toward integrating components, to achieve smaller and smaller form factors, thermal problems and high current on the PCB can become a challenge. Traditional block filters might well address these challenges, but their larger package size also presents challenges due to the mentioned space constraints; therefore, an effective asymmetrical common mode choke, together with capacitors mounted on the PCB, is a better solution

Compact and Lightweight
The new DKIV-1 series is designed for 1-phase applications at rated currents from 10 A to 50 A. Even at the max. rating, the vertical choke requires only a small footprint on the PCB, thus allowing a compact design with high performance. The compact and lightweight current-compensated chokes are throughhole mounted. They are ideal for multistage filter applications, where the combination of a vertical choke (DKIV) with a horizontal choke (DKIH) reduces the mutual interference of the magnetic fields of the individual chokes.

Performance and Approvals
The DKIV-1 current compensated chokes comply with IEC 60938 and with a rated voltage of 300 VAC or 450 VDC, they are suitable for almost any application. The DKIV-1 series is certified for current ratings from 10 to 50 A, 300 VAC according to IEC and UL and 10 to 50 A, 250 VAC according to CSA. The chokes have ENEC and cURus approvals. The DKIV-1 series has been designed for a wide temperature range of -40 °C to +100 °C.

Schurter UMT-H Fuse Family: Extension 40A and 50A

March 24, 2021

Schurter Logo1.jpg

SMD Ceramic Fuse with Very High Breaking Capacity
• 26 rated currents from 0.16 to 50 A
• International approvals
• Time-Lag T characteristic
• Impermeable to potting compound

The well introduced SMD ceramic fuses of the UMT-H family have been expanded in the form of a 40 A and a 50 A version. Schurter now offers the UMT-H with its Time-Lag T characteristic in a total of 26 rated currents between 160 mA and 50 A.

The UMT-H SMD ceramic fuse now covers a current range from 160 mA to 50 A at voltages of up to 277 VAC and 250 VDC. This makes the cuboid fuse ideal for cost-efficient automated assembly. Its large solder pads ensure excellent heat dissipation.

Applications
The UMT-H was specially developed for primary protection in industrial electronics at nominal voltages of up to 277 VAC. Additional areas of application are energy supply, medical technology and telecommunications as well as e-mobility. New market developments show that currents of 40 A and 50 A are increasingly needed for battery-powered applications.

High Inrush Currents
The UMT-H is predestined for use in applications with high inrush currents (e.g. motors) due to its Time-Lag T characteristic. But also newer applications, which increasingly rely on powerful accumulators, often require slow tripping.

Impermeable to Potting Compound
The UMT-H remains tight with most commercially available potting compounds. Therefore, this fuse is especially suitable for high demands. In addition, the high breaking capacity of 1500 A and the cap distance of >10 mm make the UMT-H the ideal choice for explosion protection.
