For years, facility managers have had to deal with the frustration of having to use 20mm "equipment" fuses in their desk power bars rather than proper BS1362 fuses. Frustration because they are both inappropriate for electrical mains protection and also pretty superfluous when we have a BS1362 fuse in all our UK plug tops. It is the recommendation of best practice, BS6396 that proliferates the use of individually fused sockets. It would not be the first time we have suggested that the legacy designs used by most of our competitors has more to do with commercial self-interest than safety!
However, we are not likely to have the standard re-drafted, so we have another solution. eLink from Burland complies with BS6396 without fuses! Instead, we have used CBE switch breakers which function as both switch and circuit breaker. These are able to be reset by the user saving time and effort. From a safety perspective, it is not possible to insert over rated fuses or worse still, metallic objects which have in the past led to fires!
Another first is our high power dual USB charger that not only can charge two iPads consecutively, but also has been adapted to work with Blackberry smart phones, something many others do not!

The 39 Series MasterINTERFACE, next-generation interface has extended its range with the addition of models featuring “push-in” terminals – the innovative connector system which allows the direct entry of solid wires without the need to open the clamp.
As with the screw terminal models, the extended range consists of 5 types, all available with electromechanical relays (1 changeover contact 6 A) or with solid state relays (1 NO 2A at 24 V DC or 230 V AC):
• Master BASIC (code 39.01 relay, 39.00 SSR)
• Master PLUS (code 39.61 relay, 39.60 SSR)
• Master INPUT (code 39.71 relay, 39.70 SSR)
• Master OUTPUT (code 39.51 relay, 39.50 SSR)
• Master TIMER (code 39.91 relay, 39.90 SSR)
Each type will be available with the same input voltage versions as the current models with screw terminals, although both screw and push-in types will now offer the following additional versions:
MasterBASIC – with AC 110 ... 125V AC/DC (using new sockets: 93.61.0.125 and 93.60.0.125)
MasterINPUT – compatible with the sensors with current less than 100 mA (using new sockets 93.64.7.024 and 93.67.7.024).
All 39 Series accessories (ie. the output fuse module 093.63, the 093.16 jumper links in Blue, Red and Black, the 093.60 separator and the 093.68.14.1 “MasterADAPTER”) can be used with the new sockets.

Hylec-APL has added two IP68 electrical connectors to its waterproof range which have diameters that are less than that of a one pound coin. The inline connectors both use cable gland technology to form a completely weatherproof seal without the need for silicone gel. The connectors are designed so that the terminals form part of the outer casing making the overall diameter of the connectors just 23mm.
* Mini-TeeTube and mini-TeePlug have an innovative design which incorporates the wire terminals as part of the external housing.
* Housing ends features a dome topped cable gland and co-moulded sealing rings ensuring a high IP rating when assembly is complete.
* Both connectors can be ordered in 2, 3 or 4 pole options.
* Quick installation, wire piercing screw terminal blocks are also available which make it possible to secure the connection to IP68 standards in less than a minute.

When it comes to household appliances used in unattended operation, the provisions of standard IEC 60335-1 have in the past few years placed higher requirements regarding glow-wire ignition temperature (GWIT). These more stringent requirements thus also apply to installed components such as power sockets, fuse holders and connectors. For this reason, all components carrying current must meet the requirements of glow-wire tests as specified in IEC 60695-2-12 and -13.
As a leading producer of fuse holders and power sockets, Schurter manufacturers a large number of products made of plastic materials with high glow-wire ratings. These are above all shock-safe fuse holders in the successful FPG series, which are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes as well as fuse blocks for assembly on circuit boards. Power connectors rated for 10 A and 16 A, including with a wide range of assembly types and various terminals, also meet these stricter requirements.
Schurter thus fulfills and exceeds the strict guidelines concerning fire prevention for electrical devices that are operated in households unattended. Which appliances are considered to fall under the «unattended» category and thus need components of this glow-wire category is defined in standard IEC 60335-2. Examples of such appliance types are dishwashers, coffee machines, washing machines and kitchen stoves.
