Schurter HCF Series, SMD Solid-State Fuse for the Most Demanding Applications

July 5, 2017

Schurter Logo1.jpg

HCF Series

Schurters's new High Current Fuse, HCF, is an extremely robust SMD fuse, designed using solid-state / thin-film technology. The HCF is especially suited for use in particularly harsh applications, where the reliable interrupt of high currents is critical.

Schurters's experience, acquired from the development of solid-state fuses for the space industry, and the cooperation with ESA, have led to the development of the HCF. The new HCF has a similar structure as the two ESA-certified types Schurter MGA-S and HCSF. Fuses used in Space applications meet the most rigorous performance requirements, with only the most advanced, most reliable technologies available. However, the intensive screening of each individual fuse, which is essential requirement for space applications, is not necessary with the HCF for non-Space applications. This leads to a substantial reduction in the cost per fuse.

Solid State / Thin Film Technology
In contrast to conventional fuses with a melting wire, the HCF has a metallic thin film layer. With this manufacturing technique, a metal layer is applied in conjunction with a so-called sputter. The two form on a glass substrate in an exact micrometer thickness. The resulting fuse element is enclosed with a ceramic housing, that guarantees the necessary stability and interrupt capacity. No harmful substances escape in solid or gaseous form during cutoff of the fuse. This technology also makes the SCHURTER HCF completely impermeable to potting compound, which can be used to achieve a hermetic seal e.g. for use in intrinsically safe applications according to ATEX and IECEx requirements.

High Breaking Capacity
The Schurter HCF has a high breaking capacity of up to 1000 A at 125 VAC resp. 125 VDC with fast response. It covers a rated current range from 5 A to 15 A.

Application Areas
Due to its robust design, the HCF fuse is particularly suited for applications which offer high reliability under particularly difficult conditions (thermal and mechanical shock, cycle endurance, etc.). Examples of possible applications: ATEX- and offshore oil and gas applications, equipment operated in sub-arctic regions, aviation electronics, and certain medical technology, where robust and space saving fuse performance is required. The temperature from -50 °C to 125 °C, as well as a vibration resistance – tested up to 1600g – make the HCF ideal for the most demanding high-performance applications under the most adverse conditions.

Schurter New FUS Fuseholder, Snap-In IP67 Dust & Water-Proof, 5 x 20 mm or 6.3 x 32 mm

December 8, 2016

Schurter Logo1.jpg

fus-fuseholder

With the new FUS fuseholder, Schurter is building on its successful FUL series for high-performance applications and presents the first dust and water-proof fuseholder with ingress degree of protection IP67 especially for rough applications.  The snap-in fuseholder series guarantees fast and tool-free assembly.   The carrier is available in both versions with slot and fingergrip and can accommodate fuse sizes 5 x 20 mm or 6.3 x 32 mm.

Thanks to the high IP67 degree of dust and water protection, the FUS series fuseholders can be used wherever high-performance applications are exposed to potentially adverse environmental influences, such as outdoor applications or in the oil and chemical industry, marine, laboratories and mining. In addition, the FUS series fuseholders are also used where the highest ingress protection against liquid and particles is required, as for instance in medical and food production equipment.

Made of halogen-free plastic, the side metal snap brackets act as heat dissipaters and are designed for fast snap-in mounting. Wires are terminated with quick-connect or solder connections. The newly styled fuse carriers accept 5 x 20 mm or 6.3 x 32 mm fuses, and provide slot or fingergrip removal for fuse replacement.

The FUS series already complies with the increased glow-wire material requirements outlined in the new IEC 60127-6 and IEC 60335-1 standards developed for unattended devices in use.  The FUS fuseholders are characterized by a particularly high-quality design and a good price / performance ratio.

Technical Data
• Fuse holder according to IEC 60127-6 / UL 4248-1
• Rated specifications: IEC 16A @ 500 VAC (4 watt) / UL 32A @ 600 VAC / VDC
• Quick-connect connections 6.3 x 0.8 mm or solder connections
• Ambient temperature: -40 ° C to + 85 ° C
• Complies with the requirements of IEC 60335-1 for unattended devices in operation. This includes the stringent glow wire requirements according to IEC 60695-2-12 and -13

Applications
Equipment exposed to harsh industrial environments or the outdoors, measurement, laboratory and medical equipment, marine, dairy and food industries, robotics, controls in mining and underground.

Schurter Explains Increased Fire Safety Requirements for Fuseholders

May 5, 2016

Schurter Logo1.jpg

FPG4

The fuseholder standard IEC/EN 60127-6 has been revised to improve fire safety. Effective in October 2017, manufacturers of fuseholders will only be permitted to market products that have been tested and authorized in accordance with the updated standard. Schurter will offer its customers upgraded solutions by the deadline.

Requirements defined for the household appliance standard IEC 60335-1 are also being applied to the fuseholder standard IEC 60127-6. So the requirement with regard to the glow-wire resistance of the material is being increased. Schurter has planed the adaption of the products and its requalifying
and is currently deploying it. That means used materials has to be tested and if necessary replaced with new glow-wire resistant material. Thus these components can be used in unattended electrical household appliances after the change-over.

Besides the fuseholders, IEC appliance inlets and power entry modules with and without EMC filters are also affected if they have a fuse drawer. The order number of the products are not touched. Therefore manufactures using Schurter products do not have to change the approvals.

Detailed information about the revised fuseholder standard and Schurters plan for implementation are available upon request.
