DRM-A: Using Gold Against Whisker
Tin whiskers represent a risk for short circuits in electronics. The underlying physical process has not yet been fully identified. However, the problem has always been circumvented by adding lead. But lead is often an undesirable element (RoHS guidelines). The DRM-A therefore completely dispenses with a
lead-containing coating and relies on gold in its place. Gold-plated end caps offer no surface for whiskers to attack. The DRM-A, which was developed specifically for Avionics applications, is suitable wherever the highest demands are made on reliability and robustness. But this does not necessarily have to be at an altitude of 50,000 feet and installed in the FRM-A. Thanks to its design, it is also ideally suited for industrial and telecom applications.

DS11
As an intelligent power entry module, the DS11 can be integrated into electronic devices and systems. The DS11 has a serial interface for communication with the host device and is IEC-60320 compliant. This allows plant and equipment manufacturers to offer their customers extensive additional functionality in no time at all - without the need for costly development and engineering.
DT31
The DT31 is an external plug-and-play and retrofit smart connector. It can be quickly connected to an existing device via an IEC60320 C14 connector without complex installation.
Smart Ecosystem
Schurter's new Smart Ecosystem is a cloud service to which the Smart Connectors are connected via WLAN. The DS11 as well as the DT31 can be controlled and their data recorded via the secure SCHURTER cloud. Basic cloud services are included free of charge, an upgrade is possible at any time.

IEC C14 Appliance Inlet Filter

Schurter launches a new very compact filter series with the 5121 appliance inlet filter. An IEC C14 inlet is surrounded by a closed metal housing and thus effectively shields the mains input. The new filter series is available as a standard or medical technology version for a rated current up to 10 A / 15 A with wire connections.
The mains input is often a critical opening in the housing. Interference via the power cables and interference radiated through the opening gets into, or out of the housing. The new 5121 appliance inlet filter series offers a very compact solution to prevent interference.
Applications
The new filter family is especially suitable for applications with very small installation depths that require high-frequency filtering of the mains input at the same time. The 5121 appliance inlet filter reliably shields high-frequency interference conducted through cables or radiated thanks to a completely closed metal shield and capacitors. Interference in the lower frequency range can be reliably attenuated with additional capacitors and chokes on the PCB. Especially the interferences in the low frequency range < 10 MHz are mainly conducted through the cables, which means that the filter components do not necessarily have to be located at the mains input and can simply be placed on the printed circuit board. Schurter offers a wide range of current-compensated and linear chokes for this purpose. Typical applications are medical, laboratory, audio- and video equipment and industrial systems.
Multiple Mounting Versions
The new filter series is available in three mounting versions: Screw mounting from the front side with plastic flange, screw mounting from the front or rear side with metal flange and snap-in mounting from the front side. All variants guarantee optimal electrical contact of the mounting panel thanks to the wide metal flange. The closed filter housing acts as optimal shielding of the mains input.
Approvals
The 5121 series is certified for currents up to 10 A/250 VAC according to IEC and 15 A according to UL/CSA at 125/250 VAC. It has ENEC, CQC and cURus approvals.

Schurter is expanding the successful FMAB NEO single-phase filter family with new variants. The filter is now available with an additional ground line choke to suppress high-frequency interference on the earth conductor. The new filter series is available in standard and medical versions for a rated current range of 1 A to 20 A with quick connect terminals.
Standard filters only filter the pole and neutral conductors, the earth line stays untouched. This can be a problem with the occurrence of high-frequency earth conductor currents, because in this case even the best filter can’t do any improvements. The new filter versions with integrated earth conductor chokes
offer a simple solution.
Ground Choke
New variants of the FMAB NEO single-phase filters are equipped with a ground line choke. In addition to the current-compensated choke on the pole and neutral conductor, the mains filters have a second choke on the earth line. The ground line choke is located between the filter input and output. The filters
therefore have two earth connections at the input and output, whereby the earth connection at the mains input is insulated from the housing. This ensures that possible high-frequency interference currents on the earth conductor cannot bypass the filter via the housing. Especially medical filters (without Ycapacitors) benefit from an improved asymmetrical attenuation in the higher frequency range due to the earth conductor choke.
Applications
Filters with earth line chokes are used in most applications with critical high-frequency earth line currents. High-frequency earth conductor currents are generated by any type of fast energy conversion such as switching power supplies, frequency converters or motor drives. Earth loops can occur in devices that are connected to other devices with shielded cables. The high-frequency interference current occurring on this earth loop is effectively attenuated with a ground choke. Typical applications are medical and laboratory equipment, audio and video as well as industrial systems.
Approvals
The single-stage FMAB NEO filter family has a particularly compact design combined with high performance. It is suitable for applications in the temperature range from -40 °C to +100 °C and has ENEC and cURus approvals.

Schurter complements the successful FMBB EP 1-phase filter family with variants for medical applications. The new filters meet their requirements up to a maximum of 100 µA leakage current.
The double-stage filters FMBB EP have a compact design with highest performance at the same time. Thanks to high-quality components, very high attenuation is guaranteed over a wide frequency range. This makes the filters ideally suited for demanding applications such as those frequently found in medical technology. The new variants are specially specified for medical applications.
New Filter Variants
The new filter variants meet the medical requirements 1 MOOP according to IEC 60601-1. The standard allows a maximum leakage current of 100 µA, for which the new variants with their maximum leakage currents of 73 µA are very well suited.

Safe Tripping of High-Energy Overcurrent in SELV Voltage Level

With the increased availability of low-cost, high-performance lithium-ion battery cells, there is a growing need to manage higher and higher currents via low-cost, SMD-assembled PCBs.
The dedicated Schurter UHP fuse with rated currents of 50 to 100 A ideally meets the requirements for high breaking capacity and fast tripping in the event of overcurrents by galvanically separating these immense energies stored in Li-Ion batteries in a controlled manner.
Market Situation
With the success of the smartphone, Li-Ion batteries have gained enormously in importance. They are also the key to the success of the even more energy-intensive electric cars, which rely on this very technology. The price per kilowatt hour of a Li-Ion battery pack has fallen to a tenth in the last decade!
Power ∼ Current2
The higher the current on a PCB, the more power must be converted and also dissipated. It is therefore particularly important for such applications to have a reliable fuse that is capable of galvanically separating the circuit in time in case of an overcurrent. The UHP fuse developed by Schurter especially for this purpose disconnects the circuit at twice the rated current within a maximum of 15 seconds and ensures that the circuit board can be built more economically and in a space-saving manner.
High Energy Short Circuit
Li-ion batteries are capable of storing very high amounts of energy and releasing it again within a very short time - for instance in the event of a short circuit. The low internal resistance of the cells can lead to short-circuit currents of up to 3000 A, depending on the configuration. The UHP fuse is built so robustly that it can withstand such high currents at the SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) voltage level of up to 63 VDC, and even at 80 VDC it can still provide a performance of up to 2000 A.
Extreme Temperature Range
The UHP is designed to operate at ambient temperatures from -55 °C to +125 °C. This makes it ideally suited for applications in the automotive sector, but also for other applications with potentially large temperature variations.
